Writing Effective Interview Thank-You Letters Print E-mail

You’ve just finished interviewing for your dream job. There’s nothing more you can do besides wait for the phone to ring, right? Wrong. To really increase your chances of getting a job offer, you need to follow-up with an effective interview thank-you letter. If written correctly, an effective interview thank you letter can be used to separate you from your competition.

Remember, the main point of sending a thank-you letter after an interview is help you to stand out in the eyes of an employer. Most of your competition won’t take the time to send such letters. Here are some key tenets to follow when developing your post interview thank you letter:

1Write a thank-you letter to each person you interviewed with. If you interviewed with three different people, you should send three separate and distinct letters. Be sure to get business cards from each interviewer to gather appropriate information of addressees.

2Send your thank-you letter as soon as possible - the day of or the day after the interview. Doing so will convey the message that you are very interested in the position. In this economy there's no such thing as being too anxious.

3Keep your thank-you letter brief, making sure that it's no more than one page.

4Start your letter by thanking the interviewer for meeting with you. This is obvious (after all this is a thank-you letter) but you'd be surprised how many people forget to open their letters with expressions of gratitude. The interviewer's time is very valuable, make sure you convey that you recognize this.

5 Next re-iterate your interest in the position. It might even bode well to express that the interview either cemented or amplified your interest in the position.

6Go on to identify your strongest selling points and reiterate them.

7Then, briefly cover any key points you forgot to mention in the interview, but know would increase your chances of receiving a job offer.

8Close by once again thanking the interviewer for their time, stating that they should to hesitate to contact you should they require additional information or materials from you, and indicating that you hope to hear from them soon.

Interview thank you letters can gain you job offers by giving you one more opportunity to present your strongest selling points to a potential employers as well as an opportunity to present important information you forgot to mention during the interview. Take the time to write a thank-you letter after your interview to increase your chances of landing your dream job.
